PSA Vision: SDUSD
A Vision for our Schools and Community: San Diego Unified School District PSA
In November San Diegans passed Proposition S, a bond measure for $2.1 billion in Green repairs and renovations to our City schools. This constitutes one of the largest stimulus measures slated for the region.
The SDUSD Construction Careers Project Stabilization Agreement (PSA) creates accountability in the use of our tax dollars. For projects over $1 million it ensures:
HEALTHCARE: Under this agreement workers will have quality, family healthcare
LOCAL HIRING: The agreement gives local residents top preference for the construction jobs created by Proposition S. The agreement sets goals that:
- 100% of the jobs go to residents of San Diego County,
- 70% to residents of the school district; and,
- 35% to people who live in high-poverty zip codes.
APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES: This agreement creates mechanisms for targeting SDUSD students and graduates, veterans, and underrepresented groups (such as women and minorities) for apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs that provide career paths into middle-class construction trades. Under this agreement SDUSD will use union (joint labor-management) apprenticeship programs, which already graduate 92% of all state-approved apprentices in CA, including 95% of all women and 92% of all minorities.
SMALL BUSINESSES: The agreement provides for outreach and assistance to local small businesses so that they can participate in the project work.
