Call Mayor Cox and tell her to get her priorities straight. Tell her Chula Vistans should come before an out-of-state developer.

The Chula Vista bayfront is a True California Gem

...one of the last remaining coastline properties in Southern California available for development. Gaylord Entertainment — an out-of-state developer that wants to build a convention center on the bayfront — is lucky for the opportunity to build here. But we only have one chance to get this right. We only have one chance to make sure that any construction on the bayfront protects our unique coastline and provides economic opportunities to the people who live and work in Chula Vista.

That’s what the San Diego Building Trades Council has been working with environmental and community groups and the Port for over five years to achieve. And then Gaylord Entertainment came along.

When Gaylord first came to town, we gave them the benefit of the doubt. We negotiated in good faith with them to ensure that local workers would get these jobs first. We had an agreement. But then Gaylord walked away. (See how Gaylord’s broken promises in Chula Vista are part of a long corporate track record).

Since then, we’ve tried again and again to reach out to Gaylord. In pursuit of an agreement, the men and women who work in construction in Chula Vista and San Diego County have compromised on nearly every single issue. But we can’t budge on our requirement that if Gaylord — which has proven untrustworthy here and in other communities — wants $300 million in public money, they need to make a legal commitment to hire local men and women who live in Chula Vista and the surrounding region first.

That’s what this campaign is all about: Local jobs first.

Mayor Cox Made Her Choice and an Out-of-State Developer Won. Who Lost? You Did.

We asked Mayor Cox to make a public commitment to her voters that bayfront jobs would go to local workers first. Instead, Mayor Cox chose Gaylord.

If Chula Vista’s own Mayor doesn’t believe local workers deserve these jobs, how can we expect to convince Gaylord? Mayor Cox needs to put the men and women who elected her first.

Who is Gaylord Entertainment?

If Mayor Cox and Port Commissioners had done their homework before welcoming Gaylord to town, they would have found a long track record of broken promises, racist policies and an insatiable appetite for feeding at the public trough. Learn more about why Gaylord is an out-of-state developer that can’t be trusted.

Gaylord, Mayor Cox and Port Commissioners: A Romance Behind Closed Doors, But Guess Who’s Paying the Tab?

Gaylord, Mayor Cox and the Port have now taken their negotiations behind closed doors and a gag order is in place. It’s a big surprise to community groups because the Port — a public agency — committed from the beginning to allow the community to have a voice in shaping how this incredible piece of property is developed.

But Chula Vistans should be most outraged that these hush-hush negotiations are about how much Gaylord will get from the public trough. Right now, the Mayor is promising over $300 million in public money without getting a single commitment from Gaylord that they will hire workers and build the convention center in a way that won’t destroy our coastal environment.
