Local Construction Worker Lends Voice to Bayfront Fight

Chula Vista — Starting today, Chula Vista and San Diego residents will hear a new voice on the contentious issue of the Chula Vista bayfront development. Kris Mills, a Chula Vista construction worker, will appear in a radio advertisement that draws attention to Mayor Cox’s choice to stand by Gaylord Entertainment, an out-of-state developer with an untrustworthy track record, instead of the men and women of Chula Vista.

“Who would have thought that our mayor would sell us out and put Gaylord’s profits before the people who live in her town?” Mills says in the ad.

Representatives for local workers have repeatedly urged Gaylord to make a legal commitment to hire local workers first in exchange for the $308 million in public money Mayor Cox and Port Commissioners are promising the company. The mayor and Port Commissioners have refused to ask for any assurance that public dollars will translate into jobs for the men and women who live in the area. Instead, the mayor has repeatedly held news conferences surrounded by developers and corporate interest groups—not all of whom live in Chula Vista—to publicly side with Gaylord.

“Gaylord has proven untrustworthy in Chula Vista and other communities,” said Tom Lemmon of the San Diego Building and Construction Trades Council, which recently broke off negotiations with Gaylord, after the Nashville-based developer repeatedly to hire local workers first. “Without a legally binding agreement, their track record suggests they would break any promise they make.”

The radio ad is set to air for two weeks on popular radio stations, including KFMB-AM, KFMB-FM, KLSD-AM and KLNV-FM.
